How we calculate
Every calculator uses standard geometric formulas (area, volume, cylinder, pitch multiplier) plus published product data where it matters, such as the yields on premix concrete bags from the manufacturer's data sheet. Where the answer depends on agronomy or climate, we use university extension and government guidance: seeding rates from extension turf guides, and the monthly rainwater balance from Texas A&M AgriLife and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Testing
- Automated unit tests run every formula against hand-worked values.
- We cross-check outputs against other public calculators. For example, a 10 × 10 ft × 4 in slab gives 33.33 ft³ (1.23 yd³), and 300 ft² of 12 in tile with ¼ in grout needs 288 tiles before waste.
- When calculators disagree (concrete steps, or grass seed rates, for example), we explain why on the page.
Limits
The results are estimates. They are not engineering advice. Densities, yields and coverage rates vary by product and supplier.
